The Three Gates of Wind Power Grid Connection: From Wind to Electricity

Sep 10,2026 | Huatech

China's installed wind power capacity continues to lead the world. Behind this rapid industrial expansion, a complete and reliable "step-up – collection – grid connection" power transmission and distribution chain serves as the critical foundation for converting wind energy into clean electricity for millions of homes.

The entire wind power process encompasses three core stages: on-site step-up, intra-farm collection, and station-side grid connection. The operating conditions are complex and diverse: equipment must adapt to the narrow, enclosed compartments inside wind turbine towers, withstand the sandstorms and temperature extremes of onshore deserts and gobi, and resist the harsh erosion of high salt spray and humidity in offshore wind power.

Huatech provides a full suite of core switchgear covering all wind power process scenarios, confronting various extreme operating conditions head-on and safeguarding the long-term stable operation of power systems—ensuring every breeze is safely integrated into the grid and transformed into a steady stream of green electricity.

01 Adapting to Extreme Conditions, Building a Solid Foundation for Wind Power Front-End Distribution

Wind turbine generators output terminal voltages of 690V/1140V, which cannot support long-distance transmission. The first step-up to 40.5 kV must be completed within the tower compartment or pad-mounted transformer. As turbine technology evolves, unit capacity has upgraded from 3-5MW to 5-20MW, and low-voltage grid-side voltage has risen from 690V to 1140V. Higher voltage levels effectively reduce cable cross-sections, lower line transmission losses, and optimize wind farm electrical layouts—better accommodating large units and long-distance transmission needs while enhancing power generation revenue and meeting project technical specifications.

WeTEK7 Series Air Circuit Breakers: The WeTEK7 series air circuit breakers cover a voltage range of 415V-1140V, with performance parameters fully matching the requirements of wind turbine units of different capacities—firmly guarding the first gate on the low-voltage side of wind turbines.

After initial step-up, electricity is collected through the intra-farm high-voltage cable network. Collector lines feature numerous nodes and complex natural environments, placing extremely high demands on equipment protection ratings and interference resistance. For different scenarios, Huatech offers customized solutions:

  • Enerswit+ 40.5kV SF₆ Gas-Insulated Ring Main Units: Cabinet width of only 450mm, footprint less than 1m², adaptable to altitudes up to 5,000 meters, precisely suited to the compact, narrow installation space of towers; fully sealed enclosure design effectively isolates sand and condensation.

  • GFM-72.5 Gas-Insulated Metal-Enclosed Switchgear: Modular and flexible architecture, adaptable to complex offshore project site conditions; fully sealed structure strongly resists marine salt spray corrosion.

Both devices ensure long-term stable operation and are now successfully supporting mainstream turbine manufacturers. With the official rollout of 72.5kV offshore wind GIS, Huatech has achieved comprehensive onshore-to-offshore wind power supporting coverage—from gobi deserts to deep-sea areas—and can provide a broader range of customized distribution solutions.

02 Full-Scenario Technical Iteration, Ensuring Efficient Wind Power Grid Connection and Export

After intra-farm collection, electricity at 40.5kV/72.5kV levels has limited transmission distance and must undergo a second step-up to 110kV/220kV at a booster station before connecting to the main grid for long-distance, large-scale power export. As the power hub of a wind farm, the booster station converges tens to hundreds of megawatts of electricity, imposing extremely stringent requirements on the performance and reliability of switchgear. To this end, Huatech covers the core nodes of booster stations with two switchgear products and an efficient station construction solution:

GIM-40.5 Gas-Insulated Switchgear: Rated parameters up to 4000A/40kA, compact fully enclosed structure, supporting 5,000-meter high-altitude operating conditions—providing robust guarantees for wind farm power collection and secondary step-up.

GFM-126 Gas-Insulated Metal-Enclosed Switchgear: Highly integrated and modular, with a minimum channel steel width of only 0.8 meters, flexibly adapting to various booster station general layout arrangements; the product has undergone multiple rounds of iterative optimization with outstanding environmental tolerance.

Beyond core switchgear, Huatech goes further by introducing a complete station delivery solution—the PHS Prefabricated Substation Solution. This solution completes prefabrication, assembly, and integrated testing of primary equipment compartments, secondary equipment compartments, energy storage compartments, and other functional units within the factory. Through modular integration, it achieves multi-compartment fusion and zoned coordination. On-site, only foundation civil works and compartment hoisting are required before entering the commissioning and operational phase—greatly simplifying on-site workflow, reducing cross-construction risks, and effectively mitigating the impact of harsh natural conditions on project schedules. Compared to traditional station construction models, the construction cycle can be shortened by over 60%, accelerating the full-process grid connection and power generation of wind farms.

Currently, this solution has been deployed and proven in multiple wind power projects across deserts, grasslands, and high-altitude areas. Balancing excellent economic efficiency with operational reliability, it has become the preferred solution for efficient booster station delivery in wind power.

03 Built on Technical Strength, Empowering New Energy with Reliable Quality

Rooted in wind power projects across mountains, gobi, grasslands, coastal areas, and offshore sites nationwide, Huatech has developed four core competencies: customized equipment adaptation technology for confined spaces, large-scale wind farm grid connection and reverse power transmission technical capability, prefabricated compartment booster station complete station delivery systems, and proven experience in long-term stable operation under extreme environments.

The vigorous development of the new energy industry relies on the hard-core strength of the entire transmission and distribution equipment chain. Leveraging a mature product matrix and prefabricated compartment complete station delivery capability, and polishing its reliable foundation with refined product structures and stringent quality control, Huatech has advanced from turbine towers to booster stations, from gobi deserts to deep-sea areas—transforming its industrial practice deeply rooted in China into solid strength serving the global energy transition, empowering a greener future.
